When you are craving something sweet but healthy this Raw Beetroot and Cacao Brownie recipe might be exactly what you're after. These little squares of deliciousness are a bit like red velvet brownies but just wonderfully healthy for you. They are raw which means that they  contain the maximum amount of health-giving enzymes and nutrients.

One of the key ingredients in this recipe is dates - which taste amazing. They are sweet, sticky and have a lovely caramel flavour. Dates are a good source of calcium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. They are also an excellent source of potassium, containing more than bananas. This recipe also contains the anti-oxidant rich super foods beetroot and cacao. That's a whole lot of goodness packed into a sweet treat! They're brilliant for your MS diet.

The brownie is decadent when finished off with a dusting of cacao powder and sprinkled with some freshly pulsed nuts. I used almonds. You can substitute the nuts with any other type of nut and adjust the amount of cacao and maple syrup to taste. The nuts can be left chunky for an extra bite or finely ground depending on your preference.

This recipe is fantastic for impressing friends at a tea party or just keeping in your fridge as a treat!

The Recipe



 2 cups Medjool dates

1 cup hazelnuts

1 cup almonds

3 Tbsp raw cacao powder

2 Tbsp maple syrup

1 beetroot

1/2 tsp cinnamon



  1. Peel and grate the beetroot.
  2. Pulse the hazelnuts and almonds together a blender until chunky. Reserve a little of the nuts to sprinkle over the top later. Continue blending the nuts until the desired consistency is reached.
  3. Add the grated beetroot, dates, cacao powder, maple syrup and cinnamon to the nuts. Continue to blend until the mixture is well combined.
  4. Press the mixture into a lined tin and refrigerate for 3 hours. Cut into squares and dust with cacao powder and sprinkle over the reserved nuts. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
